I'm still smiling about the Pad Thai angle. Still having fun though. Birding rocks. Painted Bunting was my birding highlight for today. Especially since I remember when we were expecting Torrey’s arrival and folks were telling me to get ready for sort of the same kind of life change. Good for you and your family that you remained true to who you are and that you share your experiences with your son and us too!

You’re a really good writer! I like how you included information on the natural history of the bird, included your father in the story, mentioned the status of some birds, and of course your wit.

You mentioned that Red Knots are endangered and it reminded me that I had read an article on how the destruction of mudflats in South Korea are poised to wipe out entire shorebird populations, especially Great Knots. This is a critical stopover (fuel up) for arctic shorebirds on their journey to and fro from the Arctic to their wintering grounds in Australasia. It’s sad that there’s not a whole lot that we can do about it, but perhaps Biden will get elected and we’ll at least have a chance at urging him to exert some pressure on South Korea to conserve their wetlands.

I’m having a pretty good year (or so I thought) and when we took our trip to the Dakotas and I naively thought that if I went to California and Arizona that I may be able to get to 500 this year. Boy I couldn’t have been more wrong. I had 297 when I left Oregon, all but 12 birds were Oregon Year Birds, and when I got home I had 317, so I pretty much knew I was toast. Before I left I mentioned it to John and he knew I was toast right away. Oh well, as your blog reads, it’s a great testament to the fact that it’s the journey that counts, not the number. I did get to see three new ABA birds as well as some species that I haven’t seen in a long time.

I enjoyed your photography too and I look forward to reading more of your stories!

Forest
Bosquehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02205763494348586243noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8212975712989164860.post-77607559691099758482020-05-08T06:54:56.266-07:002020-05-08T06:54:56.266-07:00In a word: devotional. I love the notion that birding is not an “escape from real life”, it’s more of a “return” or “participation” in real life. And as a fellow Five Mile Radius birder, I can say that it has changed my way of birding and also brought me closer to intimately knowing the area around where I live. I would go on to say that it has brought me a sense of feeling almost protective of the birds in that area. I just wish that Vermillion Flycatcher would have wondered about a mile south of where she spent the winter.
